Nov. 05: Doctor Strange is a new superhero film from the world of Marvel Comics and it is a breath of fresh air. The film is about a sorcerer who draws energy and magical power. And its superhero is unlike other superheroes with innate power or machine and gadgets who go saving people behind their masks. It is an exposition of the visually mystical world of Doctor Strange and it certainly casts a spell on you.

Egoist and arrogant but skilful neurosurgeon Doctor Stephen Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) loses the use of his hands in a car accident. To bring back life to his hands, he uses all his resources but in vain. All kinds of modern medicines fail to cure him. But Doctor Strange is adamant. And in search of the treatment, he is directed towards Kamar-Taj which is his last hope.

He lands in Kathmandu, Nepal and gets to the secret place with the help of Mordo (Chiwetel Ejiofor). It is at Kamar-Taj, Doctor Strange discovers the world of sorcery and learns the mystic arts under the guidance of the Ancient One (Tilda Swinton). Meanwhile, he as a sorcerer has to fight back Kaecilius (Mads Mikkelsen) who is summoning the powerful Dormammu of the Dark Dimension on the Earth.

This superhero film is on another level. It is more magical and deals with different dimensions. Put together with humour, spellbinding visuals, tight performance and crisp execution, director Scott Derrickson has kept the film interesting and enjoyable.

Doctor Strange lacks enough action and thrill, yet you want more of Doctor Strange. And it is likely. But first you must watch this film.

Cumberbatch is one reason to watch the film. He is a great actor and it is evident in the film. His charm, wit and humour are the bonus here. Other actors from the strong cast back him up. Swinton as the Ancient One is blissful and graceful — these traits are expected in her character. Mikkelsen in his negative avatar doesn’t miss in his delivery. And characters like Christine Palmer played by Rachel McAdams, and even Ejiofor as Mordo who refuses to go against nature add to the film, giving human touch to it.

The amazing production designs of the film is another reason to watch Doctor Strange — the different dimensions of the film come through on the screen and the effects have done justice to the film. And the last and important reason to watch Doctor Strange is that Kathmandu holds a special meaning for the film. Source: The Himalayan Times
