Campaign to save street children gaining momentum

Chitwan / February 27: A joint Police-Citizens Campaign to rescue the street children off the roads is gaining momentum.

After the launch of the campaign, around 40 street children who have fallen into drug abuse were rescued, Superintendent of Police (SP) Basanta Bahadur Kunwar of District Police Office (DPO) said.The number of street children has remarkably declined with the start of the effort while the incidents of robbery have also reduced.

Chitwan’s Chief District Officer, Binod Prakash Singh, called the campaign extremely successful. He added that the children rescued from the street including a girl were sent to the rehabilitation centre where they are expected to undergo a thorough transformation. He said the children have already started showing positive signs of change.

Campaign’s Coordinator Mina Kharel said the rescued children would be reformed in the first phase, and given skill-based training to make them self-dependent in the second step.

According to SP Kunwar, there are around 150 street children in the district among which 75 per cent have fallen into drug abuse and more than 40 per cent are involved in robbery. A Fund has been established to protect the street children in the district. RSS
