Women’s associations demand retrieval of dowry

Kalaiya / May 31: Women’s associations affiliated with different political parties in Bara and Parsa have demanded retrieval of all cash and kind presented as dowry during the wedding of Radhadevi Kanu, who was recently found dead in mysterious circumstances.

The nine women’s associations issued a joint statement demanding that the dowry be withdrawn from her husband’s possession.

Radhadevi, 24, of Mahagadhi Mai Municipality- 1 of Bara was married off to Subash Sah of Birgunj Sub-Metropolis – 15 on February 22 with a dowry agreement of Rs 1.5 million in cash and additional Rs 1 million worth of other materials.

Radhadevi’s relatives had presented Rs 1.3 million in first instalment under the agreement with 200,000 to be dispatched in next instalment.

The woman’s husband and her in-laws used to frequently beat her up and inflict mental and physical tortures demanding the remaining portion of the dowry. On May 20, Radhadevi was found hanging from a ceiling fan in her husband’s house. RSS
