NMA celebrates International Mountain Day

NMAKathmandu / Dec 13: Nepal Mountaineering Association (NMA) has marked International Mountain Day by organizing the 4th Mountain Festival 2017 at International Mountain Museum in Pokhara.

The NMA in coordination with Ministry of Culture, Tourism, and Civil Aviation, Nepal Tourism Board, ICIMOD, USAID, and NMA Annapurna Chapter had organized the two-day-long event.

The United Nations has recognized December 11 as the International Mountain Day. This year’s theme for the day was: Mountains Under Pressure: Climate, Hunger and Migration.

Speaking with Republica, Santa Bir Lama, president of NMA said: “Every year we have been celebrating this event to celebrate the International Mountain Day. This year also we have organized the festival to promote mountaineering tourism targeting both domestic and foreign tourists.”

The event includes several exhibition stalls representing lifestyle and cultures of mountains, Lama said.

At the event, John Reinhard from the US was awarded Sir Edmund Hillary Mountain Legacy Medal for his contribution in the field of mountaineering.
