Disaster management training provided to mediapersons

Balthali, Kavre, June 15/ Nepal is at high risk of natural disasters but very weak in response and preparedness. Experts pointed this out at a three-day training related to Disaster Risk Management organised for mediapersons by Home Ministry and Asian Development Preparedness Centre (ADPC) here today.

They stressed the need of maintaining balance between development initiatives and disaster risk reduction.
On the occasion, Joint-Secretary at the Home Ministry, Kedar Neupane, said that the Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Act has clearly mentioned about all types of disasters including the role of the centre, provinces and local levels in mitigating the risks.

He said that National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority would be formed soon as mentioned in the Act and a regulation is going to be formulated in this regard.

Presenting a working paper on Mainstreaming Development in Disaster Risk Reduction, ADPC Programme Manager Man Bahadur Thapa expressed the view that attention should be paid in disaster management as well as to maintain balance between development and disaster to achieve Sustainable Development Goals.

Similarly, Under-Secretary at Home Ministry, Umesh Kumar Dhakal, shed light about existing laws related to disaster risk reduction and management, and structural arrangement.

Likewise, Communications Manager of ADPC, Bidya Rana, said that it was necessary to develop capacity of mediapersons as they have a significant role in disaster risk reduction and management.

A total of 30 mediapersons from different media houses have participated in the workshop. RSS
