Nanda Gurung becomes first woman Speaker in history of Karnali

Kathmandu / Jan 15: Nanda Gurung of the ruling CPN-UML has been elected as the Speaker of Karnali Province Assembly.

In the third meeting of the first session of the second term of the Karnali Provincial Assembly, Gurung was elected as the Speaker by a majority. Hikmat Bahadur Bista, a senior member of the Provincial Assembly conducted the meeting and divided the votes according to the Karnali Provincial Assembly Rules, 2079 on sub-rule 6 of the sub-rule 7.

Among the 40 members of the provincial assembly, 24 out of the 38 members who attended the meeting voted for Gurung who was elected to the Provincial Assembly from Surkhet through proportional representation.

Similarly, Khadga Pokharel, the candidate for the Speaker’s post from the Nepali Congress, got 14 votes. Gurung, who was elected proportionally from UML Surkhet, became the first woman Speaker in the history of Karnali.
