Mango production likely to increase this year in Madhes

Janakpurdham / March 16: Mango production is likely to increase this year in Madhes Province.

Mango farms and orchards across all eight districts of the province have witnessed significant blossoming this season. If the fruit trees brave strong winds, hailstorms, and the Madhuwa disease, production is expected to rise considerably.

According to Senior Crops Officer Pradeep Kumar Yadav of the Agricultural Development Directorate, Madhes Province, initial assessments suggest that mango production could increase by around 60 percent this year compared to last year. This year, mango cultivation in the province covers around 30,800 hectares of land. If the weather remains favourable, total production is estimated to exceed 400 thousand metric tons.

In Madhes, the districts of Dhanusha, Mahottari, Siraha, and Saptari are considered major centres for mango farming and production. The province contributes about 76 percent of the country’s total mango production. Several varieties of this fruit are grown in the region, including Maldaha, Bambai, Kalkattiya, Amrapali, Dashahari, Nakuawa, Kerawa, Biju and Sipiya.

The produce is mainly supplied to local markets as well as to the federal capital, Kathmandu, and other major cities across the country. RSS
