Produce globally competitive resource, President Bhandari to universities

Banepa / March 11: President Bidya Devi Bhandari has said Nepal was facing the scarcity of skilled human resources owing to brain drain.

Addressing a function organized to mark the Silver Jubilees celebration of the Kathmandu University at Dhulikhel Friday, President Bhandari said the universities should produce human resources that can champion various sectors at the national level and also emerge excellent in the globally competitive market.

Although present need is of science and technology, she said, it should respect and promote national cultures, geography, history and heritages. The students need education that teaches them to respect labour, face adversities and devote to public welfare, the President stressed. “Our education should aim at meeting the need of human resources for the socio-economic development of the country,” the President added.

She also suggested that the State made adequate investment in infrastructures and resources for educational development. According to her, the educational sector could contribute to nation’s economy once Nepal is developed as the country of educational destination.

Also speaking at the programme, Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli expressed concern that the investment in education and its result was quite disproportionate. Education should not be the tool to produce unemployment, he said, it should be timely and competitive.

He pointed out the need of ending the trend gracing PM as the Chancellor of the university.

Similarly, Minister for Education, Giriraj Mani Pokhrel said the trend of copying foreign curriculum in Nepal’s universities should come to an end.

Vice-Chancellor of the Kathmandu University, Dr Ramkanth Makaju, said education should be inculcated for wisdom and ration. He shared that Kathmandu University stands in 5,000 out of 20,000 universities across the world. RSS
