KMC’s waste-to-energy project offing

Kathmandu / April 9: The Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) Office is currently busy with the preparations for generating power from the treatment of waste within the next three months. In the first phase, it has a target of generating 14 kilowatts of electricity from waste.

The waste-to-energy project will be expanded to outside the Kathmandu Valley as well if it turns successful, according to KMC Office Environmental Administration Division Chief Gangadhar Gautam.

Garbage collected at Teku Waste Transfer Station will be used to generate power in the initial phase. Some 300 tons of biological waste is needed daily for the same.

The Office collects 450 tons of waste from the Valley in a day and of it, the quantity of biological is 63 per cent. The European Union and the KMC are jointly investing in the waste- to- energy project. Power to be generated from the project to be launched as a trial will be used by the Office itself. RSS
