Respect for labour leads society towards development: President Bhandari

Kathmandu, March 5: President Bidya Devi Bhandari has said only the society that recognises human labour can find a path towards development.

During her meeting with working class women and adolescence girls engaged in different types of labour on the occasion of the International Women’s Day-2017, the President said all sorts of labour should be recognised and treated equally.

“Labour is varied in its forms, but all types of works should be equally respected. Youths are being forced to leave the country in search of jobs due to lack of employment opportunities here, the head-of-the-state said, adding that forced labour is wrong,” the President said.

On a different note, the President said politics is the tool to do social service. But, politics is there behind every problem facing the country. The country perhaps would not face this situation if it had good politics, she added.

On the occasion, Minister for Women, Children and Social Welfare Kumar Khadka said prosperity of women was a must to see the prosperous nation.

He said he felt sorry to listen to sad experiences that adolescent girls faced at their workplaces, pledging to come up with elaborative measures to address such sensitive issues.

Former Kamlari from Dang, Kamala Chaudhary also shared her story, while motorcycle mechanic, Sabita Bhandari of Nawalparassi shared her experience of rearing 15 cows to feed her family. Similarly, Mithila Devi Yadav of Janakpur, a promoter of Mithila art and tempo driver Bimala Thapa Magar recalled their struggle to get established in their jobs.

Adolescent Sabitri Basnet spoke out sexual violence she suffered while working at a restaurant and Geeta Shrestha told how her life was a full of difficulties as a brick kiln worker and Tila Gole as a garment worker. RSS
