Youth Assembly-2017 stresses youth’s role in meeting SDGs

Kathmandu / March 29: The National Youth Assembly -2017 has concluded here on Wednesday. Organised by Association of Youth Organisations Nepal at Nepal Administrative Staff College in Lalitpur, the one-day conference focused on the Sustainable Development Goals adopted by Nepal.

Other issues of the discussion were youth’s role in achieving the SDG target, their role and opportunities under the new federal setups, changing political situation, sex and reproductive health, mental health, environmental justice and sustainability, women’s leadership and their involvement in politics and citizenship. More than 500 youths from across the country had taken part.

Meanwhile addressing the conference, Health Minister Gagan Thapa said present political leadership would be taken into the hands of youths after a decade.

“We, who have got into politics through street protests, cannot drive politics after a certain period of time. New generation must take leadership then,” he said. “I have 13 years of time to serve the nation. After that I will retire from politics.”

Also, National Planning Commission member Dr Swarnim Wagle, National Human Rights Commission Spokesperson Mohna Ansari, National Youth Council member Bhawana Bhatta and UNDP country director Renaud Meyer spoke at the meeting. RSS
