Parties fail to pick consensus candidates; election to take place for selecting President and Vice President

President HouseKathmandu / October 25: The election of the President and the Vice President will now be held on the majoritarian system by the Legislature-Parliament.

The majority process is to be adopted for the election of the high offices of the President and the Vice President after no proposal of candidacy to these posts was registered on the basis of political consensus in accordance with the Article 297 (2 ) of the Constitution of Nepal.

As per the election schedule published on Saturday by the Legislature-Parliament Secretariat for the purpose of the election to the post of President and Vice President, the deadline for registering candidacy to the posts based on consensus was fixed until 1 pm today.

Now, the proposal for the candidacy to the post of President and Vice President will have to be registered in accordance with Article 297 (3) of the Constitution. Accordingly, the Secretariat has fixed 10 am to 1 pm on October 27 as the time for registering the proposal of candidacy for the election purpose.

The all-party meeting held at the Parliament House in New Baneshwor in the Capital on Sunday to strike consensus to pick the name for the post of President, ended inconclusively, with both CPN-UML and Nepali Congress sticking to their stances to field contenders from both the parties for the same post.

Earlier, both the parties had agreed to select the name for the post through consensus. As a result, as the timeframe to elect person for the post set by the Parliament-Secretariat has finished today, the process to pick the name for the post would be done through elections which is set on October 28.
