Monument in memory of enforced disappeared

missing peopleRukum / November 1: A monument has been constructed in Rukum district headquarters in memory of 13 enforced disappeared from both the state and rebel sides during the decade-long armed conflict.

The monument was unveiled on Saturday on the premises of Nepal Red Cross Society (NRCS) Rukum district chapter.

The International Committee of Red Cross (ICRC) erected the memorial to commemorate the enforced disappeared persons from the district, it is said.

On the occasion, relatives of the disappeared said that such step would help reduce their psychological trauma caused after the missing of their near and dear ones.

Over 13 thousand people killed and hundreds disappeared during the period of armed conflict. Kin of over 1000 people have been waiting the status of their loved ones but the government and the then rebel UCPN-Maoist remained passive to determine their status. Maoist party led the government twice since they came into power after the end of decade long armed insurgency but it failed to abide by its commitment of finding the whereabouts of disappeared people.

As the Maoist joined the government led by CPN-UML this is the right chance for them to find the whereabouts of missing people during the period of conflict. RSS
