US Ambassador Teplitz calls on Speaker and NC president Koirala
Kathmandu / November 4: The US ambassador to Nepal Alaina B Teplitz paid a courtesy call to the Speaker of the House, Onsari Gharti, at the latter’s office in Singha Durbar on Wednesday.
This is the first formal meeting between Speaker Gharti and newly appointed American envoy to Nepal, Teplitz. According to the Legislature- Parliament Secretariat, on the occasion Speaker Gharti assured Teplitz that task as formulating new laws for the effective implementation of the newly promulgated constitution, amending the archaic rules and approving them from the House were among her top priorities. She expressed her confidence the opposition would cooperate for the same.
Also, she apprised Teplitz that the Bill related to the Reconstruction Authority was accorded the utmost priority and expressed her belief that it would be approved at the earliest. Gharti, touching on the widespread fuel crisis in the country, assured the American envoy that the issue would be resolved soonest as government and political parties were effortful to that end.
Congratulating Speaker Gharti for being elected to the post of Speaker of the House, ambassador Teplitz pledged the support of the American government for the implementation of the new national charter as well to the Legislature-Parliament. She shared the Speaker that a 25-member team of US Congress were arriving Nepal next week.
Similarly, the US Ambassador also paid a courtesy call on President of the Nepali Congress, Sushil Koirala, Wednesday morning.
During the meeting held at Koirala’s residence in Maharajgunj, they discussed Nepal-US diplomatic relations, contribution of US in Nepal’s socio-economic development, latest political situation of Nepal and upcoming US visit of President Koirala.
On the occasion, the former Prime Minister said that they have taken a long process of promulgating a democratic constitution to the conclusion by forging consensus and understanding among political parties.
He further said that it was the happiest moment for all political parties of the country to come under the democratic process.
President Koirala also appraised the US Ambassador on the continuous support of US in the establishment of democracy, its moral support in the development and constitution writing process, and the socio-economic development of Nepal as well as its support after the April earthquake.
He also expressed the belief that the inconvenience situation surfaced in the country would be settled soon and added that he was confident that the talks between the government and agitating parties would be result-oriented.
Stating that the NC was ready to provide necessary support to resolve the existing problem soon, Koirala said that both the government and the agitating parties should think of making the Nepali people happy and prosperous by maintaining peace and stability.
Similarly, Ambassador Teplitz said that promulgation of new constitution under the leadership of Koirala-led government was the great achievement. RSS
