Two killed and dozens injured in clash between police and agitators in Saptari

Morcha protestSaptari / November 22: Two people died in a clash that took place between Madhesi morcha cadres and police, who tried to stop the agitators from obstructing the highway in Bhardaha and Rupni of the district. Dozens more are reported to have been injured in the incident that took place on Saturday night.

The deceased have been identified as 15-year-old Naren Ram of Baliya Batanaha VDC-1 and Nageswar Yadav,25, of Jomani Madhepura VDC-9 of Saptari district. Ram died in the incident that took place at the Bhardaha road section and Yadav on the Rupni road section of the Highway, according to police.

Of the more than dozen Morcha cadres injured in the incident, some are reported to be in critical condition. The seriously injured have been rushed to BP Koirala Institute of Health Sciences in Dharan and the Neuro Hospital in Biratnagar, police said.

The clash ensued between the Madhesi morcha cadres and police after 10:00 pm, when police tried to clear the highway for passenger vehicles. Police had been escorting the passenger vehicles during the night. However, on Saturday night, no vehicle could pass through the area as a result of the clash that took an ugly turn.

Meanwhile, following the incident, the Saptari district administration has imposed an indefinite curfew from the Koshi barrage to Bhardaha, Kanchanpur, Rupni and Kadmaha road section of the East-West highway and in the district headquarters Rajbiraj, according to Superintendent of Police at the District Police Office Bhim Prasad Dhakal.
