People’s livelihood programme in Kanchanjungha landscape area

Ilam mapIlam / November 24: The Kanchanjungha Landscape Conservation and Development Project has launched locals’ livelihood and conservation programmes in each VDCs of four districts of Mechi zone.

The programmes were launched in Bahundangi of Jhapa, Maipokhari of Ilam, Sidin of Panchthar and Papung of Taplejung districts.

Programme Coordinator of Kanchanjungha Landscape Project Dr Yadav Upreti said that steps have been taken for the conservation of Maipokhari, and flora and fauna of the region as well as home stay was also started.

He said that bio-diversity as well religious and touristic importance of Maipokhari would be promoted.

Likewise, feasibility study of market and Argheli cultivation in Sidin of Panchthar was conducted as part of peoples’ livelihood improvement while human-elephant conflict reduction programme in Bahundangi of Jhapa district. Lemon trees and bamboo trees would be planted in the first phase for the control of elephant terror, Dr Upreti added.

Similarly, conservation of bio-diversity is prioritised in Papung of Taplejung. The Project was launched with supports from the Ministry of Forests and Soil Conservation, International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development ICIMOD and Research Centre for Applied Science and Technology (RECAST).
