Prime Minister Oli calls international communities to support Nepal to face humanitarian crisis

PM OliKathmandu / December 3: Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has said the entire population of the country at present confronts with critical challenges of humanitarian nature due to undeclared blockade at our southern border points and urged international communities to support Nepal during the period of humanitarian crisis.

Speaking at a programme organized by the Office of the UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of Nepal’s membership of the United Nations here Thursday, PM Oli said this difficult situation must come to an end immediately and unconditionally.

The PM expressed gratefulness to the UN Secretary General for his expression of growing concern over the alarming obstruction of essential supplies and the continued impact on humanitarian operations as well as his call for the immediate lifting of all restrictions while underlining Nepal’s right of free transit.

Addressing the programme, he further said, “We continue to make strides for the consolidation of democratic gains through significant political transformation and for deepening our partnership with the United Nations through various ways. While democratization and conclusion of the peace process in the country largely characterize the evolution of the country in the domestic context, the country’s active and consistent contribution to the purposes of the United Nations characterizes evolution of our foreign policy in the international context. Our role in maintaining international peace and security, through our consistent and longstanding contribution to the UN Peacekeeping Operations, has been well appreciated.”

The PM reminded that Nepal remains steadfast in its commitment and is willing to contribute more towards international peace and security.

According to him, UN’s development agenda is very important for Nepal. Nepal’s strong commitment to the UN Charter continues to guide Nepal’s positions in the international forums. It also continues to inspire Nepal’s efforts for the cause of the Least Developed Countries, Landlocked Developing Countries as well as other countries confronting vulnerabilities of different kinds.

With the promulgation of the new democratic and inclusive constitution through the Constituent Assembly, the country has been able to institutionalize significant democratic gains, paving the way for much needed socio-economic transformation of the country, the PM said, adding that Nepal, in this context, sincerely appreciates the Secretary General’s commendation of the new constitution as a milestone. UN’s role in the recently concluded peace process was quite significant.

“With an unflinching faith in the UN, Nepal is committed to pursuing its national objectives and interests in conformity with the principles and purposes of the UN Charter. We look forward to continued partnership with the UN in the days to come,” added the PM.

The 60th anniversary of Nepal’s membership of the UN also coincides with the 70th anniversary of the establishment of the United Nations.

On the occasion, UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator, Jamie McGoldrick, said Nepal has made remarkable progress in the cooperation with the UN. He appreciated that Nepal has assimilated multifarious issues including peace, good governance, and inclusion since the first development plan of 1956.

Mr McGoldrick who is leaving for Yemen with the completing of his tenure in Nepal said Nepal’s role in the establishment of peace in the world was significant. As many as 71 security person from Nepal gained martyrdom in course of the UN peace keeping mission, he added. UN would continue support to Nepal government and the civil society here. RSS
