UN Under Secy General calls on PM and President, Oli calls for assistance from UN

Feltman meeting PresidentKathmandu / January 8: President Bidya Devi Bhandari has praised the United Nations (UN)’s active role in peace keeping missions in various countries in the world.

During her meeting with visiting UN Under-Secretary General for Political Affairs Jeffrey Feltman at the Office President Friday, the President applauded the contribution of the global organisation to peace keeping efforts in the world. On the occasion, the two exchanged views on the contribution of decade-long contribution of Nepal to world peace keeping efforts. The meeting also dwelt on the matters relating to UN support to Nepal and country’s contemporary situation, according to Spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Tara Prasad Pokhrel.

The President apprised Under Secretary General Feltman of the essence of the new constitution promulgated through the Constituent Assembly (CA), which eventually gave the country the first women President and Speaker.

Mr Feltman conveyed the message from UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon wishing for the successful tenure of the President. Nepal getting its first woman president was a matter of pride in itself and an inspiration to the world, Feltman said quoting the UN Chief. He pledged continued support from the UN to Nepal in its efforts aimed at attaining development, political stability and durable peace, according to Spokesperson Pokhrel.

Meanwhile, at a meeting with visiting UN Under-Secretary General for Political Affairs, Jeffrey Feltman, at his residence, Baluwatar, on Friday Prime Minister KP Oli has said that Nepal is looking forward to every kind of assistance- moral, physical and others- from the UN for the overall development of the country.

PM Oli reiterated that Nepal was in need of getting rid of crisis, so it was expecting assistance from the global organization. “Nepal is grateful to the support and assistance extended by the UN during the humanitarian crisis here,” said PM’s chief advisor Bishnu Rimal quoting PM Oli.

In response to a query Feltman put forth on the current crisis, the PM said the government was holding talks with all agitating sides with good intent, and with the amendment of the constitution, all these problems would fizzle out.

The meeting was attended by Chief of UN Division at Foreign Ministry, Tara Prasad Pokhrel, foreign affairs advisor to the PM, Gopal Khanal, and Acting Chief of the UN in Nepal Craig Sanders. RSS
