Foreign relations experts stress on promoting Nepal-India ties on realistic basis

areKathmandu / January 14: Foreign relations experts have underlined the need of moving forward the Nepal-India relations on a realistic basis in the changing context.

Speaking in a discussions programme on ‘Multi-faceted Aspects of Nepal-India Relations ‘ organised by the Independent Youth Democratic Association Nepal here today, they opined that both countries should add dynamism to their relations on the basis of true friendship.

They suggested establishing cooperative relations between the two countries at all the three levels- the government, people and the parliament, pointing out the need of commonality of views among the political parties on this issue.

The foreign relations experts stressed on avoiding misunderstanding and climate of suspicion for developing a strong and healthy relation.

Minister for Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Agni Kharel said Nepal has understood the security concerns and sensitivities of its neighbours and the government is actively working to reap benefits from the development achievements made by the neighbours.

“The government wants to move forward by ending the existing obstructions seen on the Nepal-India border,” he said, adding that the constitution amendment proposal tabled in the Parliament addresses the demands put forth by the Madhes-centric parties.

Former Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Dr Prakash Sharan Mahat suggested that India should extend its hands of support keeping the whole of Nepal at the centre rather than one specific part or community.

Journalist Yubaraj Ghimire expressed the view that the Nepal-India relation has become frosty of late due to the intermediaries ‘tendency to manipulate’ the relations from the informal basis. RSS
