Around 5,000 women suffer from breast cancer annually: NBCF

Kathmandu / February 4: Every year some 5,000 new cases of breast cancer surface among women in Nepal, according to Nepal Breast Cancer Foundation.

At a programme organized by the Foundation on the occasion of World Cancer Day on Thursday, Foundation’s Chairperson Dr Sujita Hirachan shared that majority of the such cases are found in rural area than in urban as the families of the women with breast cancer tend to conceal it fearing social stigma.

An estimated 50,000 people are believed to be suffering from cancer in Nepal.

Chairperson Dr Hirachan said that mostly women below 40s are found to have been infected with breast cancer whose life span could hardly be extended while if surgery is operated while it is in nascent stage, the life span of some 90 per cent women could be extended further five years.

Around 522,000 women die of breast cancer annually on average across the world, according to the World Health Organization figure. The disease is detected in some 1.5 million every year.

The Foundation also organized an awareness programme in Lalitpur Durbar Square area to mark the World Cancer Day today. RSS
