‘Action against health institutions if migrant worker fail medical test’

Labor, Foreign EmploymentKathmandu / February 21: The International Relations and Labour Committee under the Legislature-Parliament has directed the bodies concerned to take action against health institutions if a migrant worker, who carries a medical certificate from Nepal, fails medical test in the destination country.

In today’s meeting of the Committee, lawmakers said that such anomalies have surfaced for lack of action against such health institutions. The meeting also directed the Ministry of Labour and Employment to make arrangement for providing compensations to the workers, who return from foreign employment after failing a medical check-up in the destination country.

Similarly, the Committee also asked the Ministry to provide a progress report regarding worker’s biometric medical test within the next 15 days. The Ministry had introduced the biometric system for medical test of workers willing to go for Malaysia for overseas employment with effect from July 8, 2015.

The meeting also directed the Ministry to submit a working procedure along with clear concept and concrete criteria regarding monitoring and renewal of health institutions, carrying medical test of those workers going for foreign employment, within 15 days.

The meeting also directed to establish a provision whereby only the concerned embassy or mission can validate the letter of demand for Nepali workers. It issued a directive to the concerned authority to inform the committee within seven days of the reason to only authorize two health institutes for medical examination of workers going to Israel for foreign employment.

At the meeting, Minister for Labour and Transport Dipak Bohara said the license of 201 health institutes was renewed while 83 of those not fulfilling the required criteria were not renewed.

Minister Bohara shared that the government was seeking the truth about the news reports about the Malaysian government reportedly stopping to invite Nepalese workers. The Nepali ambassador to Malaysia had been asked to seek information in this regard. He further said that the government officially could not find out the truth about it due to official holiday in Malaysian until Saturday.

Minister Bohara added that Nepali workers carrying the labour permit were not facing any trouble in Malaysia.

Issues related to labour permit, demand letter acceptance, medical test, labour returned from Malaysia after failing medical test, renew and monitoring of health institutions involving in labour’s medical test among other were discussed in today’s meeting. RSS
