‘Necessary to reach grassroots level to achieve SDGs’

CP MainaliKathmandu / February 22: Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Women, Children and Social Welfare, CP Mainali, has said that sustainable development goals (SDGs) would only be achieved if rights were guaranteed at the rural level.

Inaugurating a two-day workshop on ‘Gender Equality for the Achievement of Sustainable Development Goals’ jointly organised by the National Women’s Commission and Beyond Beijing Committee (BBC) here today, Deputy Prime Minister Mainali pointed out the need of supports of all for the implementation of the new constitution as it has ensured rights to all communities.

He said, “Rights of rural level people should be protected to achieve the SDGs.”

Expressing the view that it would not be suitable to think for achieving all goals at same time, the DPM mentioned that all should move ahead together for the same.

He said, “Rights of women can be protected only if mechanism of development is implemented in districts and centre by ensuring women’s rights. Support of all organisations, government and non-government bodies and civil society is necessary for the same.”

Similarly, Acting Chairperson of the National Women’s Commission, Manu Humagain, expressed the view that unfulfilled rights could be ensured if the rights guaranteed in the constitution are implemented.

Humagain said that most of the goals could be achieved if there was collaboration between the government and more than 40,000 non-government offices in Nepal.

Likewise, Acting Chairman of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), Prakash Wasti, clarified that the government should play the leading role to meet the SDGs.

Likewise, Chairperson of the BBC, Shanta Laxmi Shakya, said that lots of works are still left to achieve the goals of 50/50 partnership till 2030 as set target by the UN.

She said, “Most of rights of women would be guaranteed if concept of democracy, human rights and inclusion were well implemented.” RSS
