Green entrepreneurship project on waste management launches in Ilam

solar-wind energyIlam / April 4: The Public-Private Partnership Project for Green Entrepreneurship has started carrying out works in solid waste management in a speedy manner.

The project, with European Union financial support, is launched in Ilam Municipality. It has launched a model solid waste management scheme under the Municipality’s Green City concept. It is operated under the Winrock International.

Works like construction of a compost plant, household survey and data collection on solid waste situation have been carried out under the Rs 128.7 million-project. The EU has provided Rs 115.9 million to the project cost while the rest is funded by the Ilam Municipality.

As per the survey carried out at 5,475 households and organisations, the Ilam denizens produces 900 grammes of solid waste per household a day, and a organisation 1.7 kilogrammes of solid waste a day, on an average. Of this waste 72 percent is biodegradable while 28 per cent is non-degradable waste.

On an average, 1.01 metric tonnes of solid waste is generated in Ilam Municipality. It is said 150 metric tonnes of compost is produced annually from 374 metric tonnes of biodegradable waste.

The survey also showed that 42 per cent of the residents of the town have access to the Municipality’s waste collection process and that 60 per cent of the households segregated the solid waste at its source. The townsfolk can pay Rs 46 to Rs 100 per month as the tariff for waste management.

The project is a partnership between Winrock International, Planet Finance, Namsaling Community Development Centre and the Ilam Municipality with funding by the EU. RSS
