NHRC warns of deplorable human rights scenario

Butwal / Sept 12: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has warned that the human rights scenario of the citizens living in villages near the southern borderline is in a worrisome state.

The Commission after an inspection tour of the southern belt pointed out the problems of erosion and flooding from the construction of artificial dams.

A high level team led by NHRC member duo Govinda Sharma Poudel and Mohana Ansari visited Rupendehi, Nawalparasi, Kapilvastu and Dang’s bordering areas to take stock of the human rights scenario.

During a programme organized on Sunday by NHRC Sub Regional Office in Butwal, Poudel mentioned that citizens living near the border had been seriously impacted by inundation.

The Marchabar area of Rupendehi, Bharthahawa, Butwal’s Devinagar, Buddhanagar, Susta, Narsahi, Kudiya and Paklihawa of Nawalparasi and Kapilvastu’s Rangpur, Bedauli, Parsiya, Hardaunal areas have been impacted by flooding due to construction of artificial embankments.

Commission member Poudel said that the locals of these areas are forced to cross the border into neighbouring country’s market places for purchasing daily essential commodities, education and health treatment.

The children from Susta are forced to leave their study after Grade 8 due to lack of a bridge over the Narayani river while locals of Koilabas are dependent on India for drinking water.

He further added that the ‘state presence does not seem to be there’ in these areas. RSS
