Discussions on impeachment proposal against Karki on Tuesday; Student unions urge NC Prez to support the proposal

LokmanKathmandu / Oct 23: Discussions on the impeachment motion against the Chief Commissioner of the Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority Lok Man Singh Karki would start in the Parliament on Tuesday.

As the motion registered by as many as 157 lawmakers was tabled at the House meeting today, Speaker Onsari Gharti Magar announced that the discussions would begin after two days.

After holding discussions on the motion against Karki at the Parliament, it would be sent to the Impeachment Recommendation Committee.

The House then would put the motion to vote if the IRC recommended the same. The IRC will provide opportunity to Karki to defend the allegations against him.

Meanwhile, ruling CPN (Maoist Center) has decided to support the impeachment motion and oust CIAA Chief Lokman Singh Karki.

A Parliamentary Party meeting of the party in New Baneshwor decided in this regard. Leader Agni Sapkota said party Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal urged for the logical conclusion of the issue. A party meeting on Saturday had tasked Dahal to coordinate and decide on the impeachment motion against Karki.

With UML already united in support of the motion and Maoist also clearing their stance, it has put further pressure on another ruling party Nepali Congress to declare their position on the motion. Karki’s status currently remains suspended as CIAA chief.

In another development, various student unions on Sunday urged Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba to support the impeachment motion registered against CIAA Chief Karki at the Parliament Secretariat.

Representatives of 13 student unions met Deuba at his residence this morning and urged him to support the motion.

In response, Deuba expressed his commitment to play his part in making the state and people’s sovereign rights venerable, according to All Nepal Free Students Union Secretary RC Lamichhane.

Deuba said that he would take the decision after holding consultations with the party leaders. The students are set to hold a demonstration at New Baneshwor today as part of a pressure campaign for impeachment of the Chief of the anti-graft constitutional body. RSS
