‘Works on installing pipelines and black-topping will be over before monsoon’

Melamchi Drinking Water Project pipelineKathmandu / March 14: The Environment Committee of the Legislature-Parliament has directed the bodies concerned to sprinkle water and tar on the roads that have been dug up for laying down the water supply pipelines under the Melamchi Water Supply Project to reduce the environmental pollution resulting from the dust.

The committee also directed the Project to conclude the project works at the earliest given the adverse impact on the environment and the public health the digging up of the roads for laying down the pipelines has created.

Before this, taking part in the discussions on the issue in the committee meeting, lawmakers on the committee had said that the problem of dust and smoke due to the haphazard construction and digging of roads is an example of disorder in all sectors of the national life.

They also pointed out that there was lack of inter-ministry coordination in development projects.

Secretary at the Ministry of Water Supply and Sanitation, Bheem Prasad Upadhyaya and DDirector of the Melamchi Water Supply Project, Ritesh Prasad Khatri said the laying down of water supply pipes is being carried out in the Kathmandu Valley by simultaneously mobilizing 1,200 human resources at 40 places in the Valley.

They said the task of laying down the pipelines and black topping the roads that have been dug up for that purpose would be completed before the monsoon and the works have been expedited so that the Valley denizens would get the water supplied from the Melamchi River within the coming Dashain. RSS
