President Bhandari calls all to unite to end violence against women

President VAWKathmandu / Jun 11: President Bidya Devi Bhandari has said that all should join hands together to curb violence against women.

At a program organized to honour women and to release the Sahana Pradhan Special Publication on the occasion of 25th anniversary of Women Security Pressure Group Nepal in the capital city Sunday, the President said that control of violence against women is today’s need. Many women are still suffering in the name of Chhaupadi and dowry system in different parts of the country, she made aware.

President Bhandari said that peace, justice and economic prosperity were not far if all State apparatus were well mobilized.

Saying that the first phase of local level elections were successfully completed, the President expressed confidence that the women’s participation would reach around 40 per cent after the second phase of local level elections.

During the program, CPN (UML) Vice-Chairman Bamdev Gautam said that collective efforts were required to end violence against women.

Saying that he had 25 years of camaraderie with Sahana Pradhan in the party, Gautam stated that Pradhan had the capacity to battle the odds.

Likewise, Chairman of National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) Anupraj Sharma said that women’s participation in different layers of State was not implemented in practice though it was mentioned in the law.

On the occasion, President Bhandari felicitated 10 different women for their contributions in various sectors. Those receiving honour include Mithaidevi Bishwakarma, Bijaya Sharma, Sabitri Aryal Silwal, Umadevi Das, Chandrakal Kiran and Bam Kumari Budha.

Similarly, politician Nanimaiya Nakarmi, artiste Bhuwan Chand, legal practitioner Shilu Singh and litterateur Toya Gurung were honoured.

During the programme, special publication on Sahana Pradhan was released. RSS
