Filing of nominations largely peaceful across country

Election CommissionKathmandu / Jun 18: The filing of nominations for June 28 local elections has been held in an enthusiastic and peaceful manner, according to the Election Commission of Nepal.

Candidates representing various political parties and independent ones filed their nominations on Sunday as per the revised date for the nomination in the second phase of local level polls. Earlier, the Election Commission had scheduled June 16 as the date for filing nominations.

However, one UML cadre is reported to have been killed today itself in a clash that broke out between cadres of CPN-UML and Nepali Congress in Bajura when both the parties with their respective candidates came face to face on their way to a nomination centre.

The elections will be held in 35 districts (including Nawalparasi and Rukum) of Province no 1, 5 and 7. The election date for Province no 2, however, has been deferred while the first phase of elections was conducted in 34 districts of Province no 3, 4, 6 on May 14.

ECN Spokesperson Surya Prasad Sharma said that the candidates and the representatives of various political parties filed their respective nominations from 8 am to 4 pm on Sunday in a systemic way.

Spokesperson Sharma commented that the massive participation of the candidates for the nomination filing has proved that the political parties and their candidates alike were eager and enthusiastic about the upcoming polls.

The nomination filing was carried out for electing people’s representatives for one metropolitan city, seven sub-metropolitan cities, 111 municipalities and 215 rural municipalities.

There are altogether 6,432,765 registered voters who will be casting their ballots to elect 15,038 people’s representatives for 334 local units, according to the Commission. RSS
