SC summons corruption files against Sharma from Special Court; CJ Parajuli administers oath of office to Commission Chairperson

Supreme CourtKathmandu / July 23: The Supreme Court (SC) on Sunday summoned the files related to the corruption case against suspended Chief of the Inland Revenue Department (IRD) Chudamani Sharma from the Special Court.

Responding to a habeas corpus writ filed by Sharma’s wife Kalpana Upreti Sharma, a full bench of Justices Deepak Raj Joshi, Deepak Kumar Karki, Kedar Prasad Chalise, Shardha Prasad Ghimire and Anil Kumar Sinha issued the order this afternoon.

Sharma’s wife, on July 11, had filed a habeas corpus petition at the SC demanding release of her husband claiming detention of her husband was illegal.

The Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA) has sought a fine of Rs 10.96 billion from three officials of the Tax Settlement Commission (TSC) on charge of misappropriating billions of rupees by settling taxes in a dubious way.

The anti-graft constitutional body had filed a charge-sheet against TSC Chairman Lumdhoj Mahat, member Umesh Dhakal, and suspended member secretary and Director General of IRD Chudamani Sharma.

A team deployed from the CIAA on June 3 had arrested Sharma on charge of misappropriating revenue and settling taxes. Mahat and Dhakal are still at large.

CJ Parajuli administers oath of office to Commission Chairperson
In another incident, Chief Justice Gopal Prasad Parajuli has administered oath of office and secrecy to Constituency Delineation Commission Chairperson Kamal Narayan Das.

Chairperson Das was sworn in amidst a function held at the Supreme Court on Sunday.

Likewise, Chairperson Das administered oath of office and secrecy to Commission members Madhav Adhikari, Biswo Kalyan Parajuli and Ganesh Raj Karki.

Yogendra Sharma Poudel has been designated the member-secretary role of the Commission.

The government on July 20 formed the Constituency Delineation Commission headed by former apex court justice Das.

The Commission has been given the mandate of 21 days since the commencement of work to submit its report on the number of constituencies to be formed for provincial and House of Representatives elections. RSS
