President Bhandari hosts tea reception on Maghi; VP calls for focusing on economic prosperity
Kathmandu / Jan 15: President Bidhya Devi Bhandari hosted a tea reception program on the occasion of Makar Sankranti also known as Maghi.
Present on the occasion were Vice-President Nanda Bahadur Pun, Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba, Chief Justice Gopal Prasad Parajuli, Deputy Prime Ministers, former Vice President, former Prime Ministers, former Chairman of the Interim Council of Ministers, Ministers, different political parties’ leaders, members of federal and provincial parliaments, chiefs of security bodies, among others.
The Tharu community marks the day as the New Year and day of freedom as well.
The Makar Sankranti is a cultural and religious festival day in the lunar calendar in reference to deity Surya (Sun) marking the first day of its transit into Makar Rashi (Capricorn) that starts of longer days.
Prior to this, President Bhandari had wished for peace, prosperity, good health and happiness to all Nepali sisters and brothers at home and abroad on the occasion of the Makar Sankranti and the Maghi festival.
The Hindu devotees throng Devghat, Kaligandaki, Bagmati, Indrawati, Triveni, Ridi, Betrawati among other places for a holy bath today.
Country should focus on economic prosperity, says VP Pun
Meanwhile, Vice-President Nanda Bahadur Pun today said that the country should focus its attention on building a prosperous Nepal along with sustainable economic development.
Speaking at a programme organised at Bhrikutimandap on the occasion of Maghe Sakranti, The Vice-President said that the country would be headed towards economic prosperity by implementing the constitution.
Stating there are some dissatisfactions regarding the constitution, he expressed the view that political parties are involved to address such issues.
He said, “I am confident that they would give an outlet to the country after reaching a positive conclusion soon.”
He underscored the need of strong national unity for building a prosperous Nepal, saying the national unity could be strong only from unity among all ethnic groups and communities.
Stating that Nepal is a naturally beautiful country in the world, he said, “People from different ethnic groups, cultures, religions, and communities have made it more beautiful.”
“The Magar community has a significant role in building a prosperous Nepal and national unity,” he said, adding “the Magar community always played a leading role in any movement of the country.”
