24 elected unopposed to NA; CPN-UML, CPN MC meet to discuss NA election

ElectionKathmandu / Jan 29 : Twenty-four members have been elected unopposed to National Assembly (NA) from seven provincial assemblies. The Election Commission (EC) on Monday announced the final list of candidates for the upper house.

The 24 candidates were elected unopposed as no other contender filed nominations for those seats or some of the contenders withdrew their nominations. According to Election Commission, 52 candidates will contest for the remaining 32 NA seats.

According to constitutional provision, each province will elect eight members including three from open, three women, one Dalit, one disabled or minority category. All the candidates from Province 2 have been elected unopposed.

Six candidates in Province-1, eight candidates in Province-2, one candidate in Province-4, three candidates in Province-5, six candidates in Province-7 were elected unopposed. The election will be held for all eight seats in Province-3, and 6. The NA election will be held on February 7.

Of the 59-member National Assembly, three members will be nominated by the president on the recommendation of government.

CPN-UML, CPN MC meet to discuss NA election

Meanwhile, a joint meeting attended by the leaders of the CPN-UML and CPN Maoist Centre held this morning discussed the upcoming National Assembly (NA) election slated for February 7, and ways to make the left alliance victorious.

Top leaders of both political parties were present in the meeting that took place at the CPN-UML parliamentary party office at Singha Durbar today.

The meeting majorly focused on the NA election, discussing the candidacy from Province 3, and ways for the left alliance to come out victorious in the elections by minimising the risk of loss, shared CPN-UML Secretary Pradeep Kumar Gyawali, talking to media.

The meeting focused on making the left alliance candidates win in the election by seeking possibility for an electoral alliance with other small political parties.

CPN-UML is sending 29 candidates and CPN MC is sending 14 candidates to the NA election.

The meeting was attended by heads of both political parties, KP Sharma Oli and Pushpa Kamal Dahal, along with other party leaders.

The Sunday meeting between Oli and Dahal had concluded with the agreement on sharing of seats of State Chief Ministers, Speakers and Deputy Speakers.
