Media Society condemns interim order

Kathmandu / Feb 26: Nepal Media Society has condemned the interim order issued by the Supreme Court to the Press Council to take action against the media.

Issuing a statement on Monday, the society has urged to correct the order by the apex court citing it as the background to impose the pro-censorship in the media and is against the article 19 of the constitution.

The statement, signed by chairman of the society, Pushkar Lal Shrestha stated that the society opposed the interim order issued by the apex court and assumed the commitment from the judiciary for the free press.

The interim order issued by a single bench of Chief Justice Gopal Prasad Parajuli, on Sunday, had stated that various news reports, editorials and other reading materials published in relation to the chief justice were biased and seem to have been reported on the basis of false details.

The apex court asked stakeholders of Kantipur publications to attend the apex court personally for recording their statement along with the reason or ground based on which they published news that have courted controversy.

Likewise, the bench had also directed Nepal Press Council to monitor over the |breach of the code of conduct for journalists and decide whether or not to suspend the government facilities and privileges given to Kantipur daily.
