Biodiversity study begins in Lumbini

Rupandehi / Jan 5: A biodiversity study has begun targeting Lumbini, the birthplace of Gautam Buddha.

Lumbini spreading in the area of 1,155 bighas of land is a site rich in biodiversities. It is home to several species of plants, animals and insects. The study will cover the plants life, animal and aquatic life as well, said the Lumbini Development Trust (LDT).

“The study aims to find out the different species of plants available here and it is expected to give more information about the plants existent during the Buddha-era,” Trust vice chair Vikkhu Metteyya said.

According to LDT botanical section officer Sabbir Khan, there are presently 150 varities of plants in the historic area and the study will show whether any new plant was emerged. Twelve species of plant are so far known related to the Buddha period. RSS
