201st birth anniversary of Karl Marx marked in Nepal

Kathmandu / May 5: A function was held in the capital on Sunday to mark the 201st birth anniversary of Karl Marx, the German philosopher and thinker.

Addressing the event, senior NCP leader Jhalanath Khanal, who is also the former prime minister, said that the Karl Marx thoughts are highly relevant in the contemporary global politics.

“It is not possible to go for socialism if we did not transform ourselves in line with the spirit of the 21st century,” he said.

Khanal praised the Chinese model of economic development on the basis of socialism. “China has achieved sound and stable economic growth by implementing its unique type of socialism. The country has been able to lift millions of people out of the poverty in the past three decades which is exemplary. We can learn from China in terms of successful practice of the socialism,” he observed. Khanal also said that the socialism collapsed in the former Soviet Union due to its several internal problems.

Chairman of ruling Communist Party of Nepal Pushpa Kamal Dahal, and NCP leaders addressed the program organized by the Karl Marx Birth Bicentennial Celebration Committee.

Marx, a 19th-century German philosopher, and socialist revolutionary was born on May 5, 1881. He was an advocate for communism and taught about the political and social dynamics in the social system.

Karl Marx’s study revolved around the economic analysis in the society which means economic conditions are the major reasons that can bring change or revolution. It was his study in economics that laid the foundation for the understanding of labor and its relation to capital. His book ‘Das Capital’ showed the world way towards a classless society.
