Kathmandu University organizes First Extensive Reading Symposium

Lalitpur / July 30: The first-ever Symposium on Extensive Reading has been organized in the capital. The one-day event organized by Kathmandu University School of Education was attended by 60 English teachers from over 20 schools from the capital and nearby districts.

Speaking at the program, the participants stressed the necessity of a healthy reading habit and remarked on social media’s effect on the new generation and that nurturing a reading habit on future students was the need of the hour.

Prof Ann Mayeda from Konan’s Women’s University, Japan reflected on her journey on nurturing Extensive Reading in Nepal’s schools. She recounted how she and her team had been running numerous training, experiments in Nepal for nearly a decade now, exploring Extensive Reading.

Highlighting the Nepali tradition of extensive reading in the past diminished and efforts of the practice have played a key role in promoting reading culture, Associate Dean Prof Laxman Gnawali shared the background of how the first-ever event was materialized. He also highlighted how reading culture in schools can be developed if sustained initiatives are taken.

The participants committed to set up an association for Extensive Reading in Nepal in the near future.
