Karnali highway resumes after two days

Jumla / August 28: Vehicular movement along the Karnali highway resumed today as Road Division Office cleared the landslide that had been disrupting the road since Monday.

The massive landslide at Tilagupha municipality-7, Chhapregaun along Kalikot section of the highway had obstructed the road with huge rocks fell off the hill. The villagers alongside the road had shifted to a safer place following the landslide.

“The landslide has put three settlements at risk,” Deputy Superintendent of Police at District Police Office Kalikot Shyambabu Oliya told Republica Online. However, no human casualty was reported.

According to the Mayor of Tilagupha municipality Ratan Bahadur Shahi, 24 houses have been displaced leaving four of them completely destroyed while 20 others are at risk.

Landslide and flood also swept away Baligad micro-hydro project leaving the local villages deprived of electricity. Water-mills along the Baligad river were also washed off, said a local Dhir Bahadur Shahi.

Due to the growing risk, villagers don’t stay at their houses, rather under the tents in the open spaces.
