Karki to perform as Acting Chief Justice; 21 charges against CJ Rana

Kathmandu / Feb 13: Supreme Court’s senior-most justice Deepak Kumar Karki has been the Acting Chief Justice with the registration of an impeachment motion against Chief Justice Cholendra Shumser JB Rana.

Lawmakers from the ruling parties moved the federal parliament secretariat, Singha Durbar this morning to file a motion of impeachment against Rana. With this, Karki has become the acting CJ naturally as being the senior-most justice at the SC.

The impeachment proposed by Dev Prasad Gurung of the CPN (Maoist Centre), Dr Pushpa Bhusal of the Nepali Congress and Jeevanram Shrestha of CPN (Unified Socialist) was backed by Nepali Congress Dr Minendra Rijal and many other lawmakers.

Lawmakers level 21 charges against CJ Rana

Lawmakers of the ruling coalition filed a 21-point impeachment motion against Chief Justice Cholendra SJB Rana on Sunday.

A total of 98 lawmakers have signed the proposal to impeach CJ Rana registered at the Parliament Secretariat today, alleging that Chief Justice SJB Rana is incapable of upholding democracy and the rule of law.

CJ Rana was automatically suspended from his post following the registration of the impeachment motion.

In the impeachment motion, CJ Rana has been accused of being incapable of safeguarding democracy, human rights, justice, rule of law, constitutional supremacy and an independent, competent, impartial and responsible judiciary.

Similarly, the impeachment motion states that Chief Justice Rana, during his tenure at the Supreme Court so far, has been exposed to excessive distortions, inconsistencies and corruption and intermediaries.

Minister for Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Dilendra Prasad Badu, Nepali Congress (NC) Whip Pushpa Bhusal, CPN (Maoist Center) Whip Dev Gurung and CPN (Unified Socialist) MP Jeevan Ram Shrestha are among those registering the motion.
