Four mountaineers die while climbing in a month
Chhetu Sherpa / Kathmandu, May 10: Four people have lost their lives while climbing mountains this month.
According to the expedition companies, four climbers succumbed while climbing Dhaulagiri, Kangchenjunga, Everest/Sagarmatha and Lhotse mountains.
“Khudam Bir Tamang, guide of the South Korean climbing team, went missing from the first camp while climbing Lhotse Mountain,” said Mingma Sherpa, Chairman of Seven Summit Treks.
He said that the search for the guide, missing since Monday, has been put to a stop as there is no possibility of finding him alive. The South Korean climbers were climbing Mt Lhotse through a new way from the south face.
Members of the team have speculated that the missing guide might have been stuck in a crevice as it was a new way. The company informed the other six members including Sung Teik Hong have continued their summit.
Narayanan Iyer from Maharashtra, heading for the summit of the third highest mountain, Kangchenjunga, lost his life at an altitude of 8,200 meters on May 5.
Antonios Sykaris, 55, a Greek national, died while descending Mount Dhaulagiri on April 22, 2021. Sykaris fell just below the summit point at a height of 7,400 meters. Likewise, one guide lost his life while ascending Mount Everest on April 14.
Nimatenji Sherpa, aged 37, from Mapya Dudhkoshi Rural Municipality-7, Solukhumbu, fell ill near camp crossing Khumbu icefall while ascending Mt. Everest.
