Physical Infrastructure Ministry continues to look after roads within KMC

Kathmandu / July 19: The Ministry of Physical Infrastructure and Transport will continue to look after the roads under the care of the federal government within the Kathmandu Metropolitan City, for the time being.

The KMC and the Ministry have reached an agreement to this effect in a meeting today, which is attended by Physical Infrastructure Minister Mohammad Istiyak Rai and the KMC Mayor Balendra Shah.

“At present, the federal government is taking care of roads for the time being although it is within the scope of work of the KMC itself,” said Minister Rai. Around 400 km of roads within the KMC are under the responsibility of the federal government, and they will be looked after by the ministry itself, he added.

According to the minister, the meeting also discussed the issue of managing public transportation in the city. Following the implementation of federalism, the Ministry now is under its responsibility to look after only the inter-province transport system. “We want to install a GPS device in vehicles.”

A committee has been formed in a bid to address problems relating to driving license and embossed number plate system after the minister assumed office. The committee will submit its report in a day or two and the process would move ahead accordingly, he said.

Efforts were on to provide a driving license on the same day or the day after tomorrow after passing the trial, according to him. RSS
