KMC announces ‘No Vehicle Zone’ for ancient areas including New Road and Handigaon

Kathmandu / June 14: The Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) has announced that ancient and archaeological areas, including New Road and Handigaon, will be designated as ‘No Vehicle Zones’.

Mayor Balendra Shah made this announcement on Friday while presenting the policies and programs for the upcoming fiscal year 2024/25.

He also stated that efforts will be made to bring Boudhanath and Swayambhunath, which are on the World Heritage List, under the jurisdiction of KMC for better operation and management. Vehicles will also be prohibited in other heritage sites.

Mayor Shah mentioned that a comprehensive Handigaon Master Plan will be prepared to redevelop the Lichchavi-era town and list it in the World Heritage Site List. Additionally, the KMC plans to encourage homestays in this area.
