SC seeks explanation on lottery system for admissions at St. Xavier’s and St. Mary’s schools

Kathmandu / Feb 21: The Supreme Court has ordered St. Xavier’s and St. Mary’s schools to explain why they admit students through the lottery system.

A single bench of Justice Nahakul Subedi issued the order on Friday on a writ petition filed by Advocate Sujata KC that claimed that admitting students through the lottery system is illegal.

After the initial hearing of the writ, the court has sought written responses from St. Xavier’s School, St. Mary’s School, Lalitpur Metropolitan City, the municipality’s Education Department, the Ministry of Social Development, Bagmati Province, and the ministries of Education and Sports.

Advocate KC has demanded in the writ that admissions follow a merit-based system rather than a lottery system.

The writ also argues that admitting students through the lottery system, without assessing their academic abilities, creativity, and qualifications, is unfair.
