KMC estimates 8,000 families in 128 areas at monsoon risk

Kathmandu / June 13: Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) has identified 128 locations and estimated over 8,000 families in the capital vulnerable for possible inundation during the upcoming monsoon.
The metropolis has identified the vulnerable areas and has prepared an action plan for potential risk reduction based on the forecast of rainfall from June 1-28 this year. The task force formed under the coordination of KMC Director Basanta Acharya has prepared the plan by identifying and mapping the flood areas.
The meeting chaired by Acting Chief and Coordinator of the Metropolitan Disaster Management Committee Sunita Dangol approved the plan based on the projections of the Department of Water and Meteorology. The KMC has also approved the pre-monsoon preparation and response plan.
According to Anirudra Nepal, chief of the KMC’s Disaster Management Department, the lower areas around the confluence of the Bagmati and Bishnumati rivers are at particular risk. Several locations in ward numbers 10, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 26, 29 and 32 are prone to submergence.
In terms of impact, residents of ward number 16 are likely to be the most affected where about 1,600 families are at risk. It is estimated that 1,255 families may be affected in ward number 26, about 950 families in ward number 3 and 955 families in ward number 4 are at risk.
