TU directs constituent campuses to remove student union structures as soon as possible

Kathmandu / June 29: Tribhuvan University (TU) has asked its constituent campuses to remove existing student union structures from them.

Issuing a public statement, the Directorate of Student Welfare and Sports of the TU has asked the concerned campuses to eliminate student organization structures in accordance with the government’s decision.

Tribhuvan University has issued the notification in accordance with the letter that it received from the University Grants Commission and the letter from the Ministry of Education and Sports. In order to solve the problems of partisan interference in the education sector, failure to hear the real voice of students and decline in educational quality, it was said that the structures of partisan student organizations would be removed from schools/universities within 60 days and a student council or voice of student mechanism would be developed within 90 days.

The TU has directed the campuses to enact the decision as soon as possible.

Through announcing a 100-point governance reform agenda, the Balen Shah led government had announced plans to remove party-affiliated student organizations from schools and universities within 60 days. According to the plan, existing student wings linked to political parties will be dismantled within two months, while an alternative mechanism—such as student councils or “voice of students” platforms—will be developed within 90 days to ensure representation.
