Importance of Trauma-Informed Care for children

Phanindra Adhikari: Trauma-informed care (TIC) is crucial in addressing the profound impact of trauma, especially within school settings. In Nepal, students are often exposed to traumatic events such as natural disasters, poverty, domestic and sexual violence, harsh punishment by teachers, and the recent COVID-19 pandemic. These experiences can have long-lasting effects on their physical, emotional, and psychological well-being, hindering their ability to learn, grow, and thrive. Implementing TIC in Nepali schools can create environments that support the healing, development, and well-being of students.

A safe and supportive environment is at the core of TIC. Schools must ensure physical and emotional safety for students who have experienced trauma by creating classrooms where students feel secure and unthreatened. A predictable and consistent environment helps restore students’ sense of safety and trust, which traumatic events often erode. This involves the physical setting of classrooms, the demeanor of teachers, and the overall school atmosphere. By focusing on safety and protection, schools can become anchors where students begin to heal and engage academically.

Trust is a fundamental element of TIC. Schools in Nepal can foster trust through clear, consistent, and honest communication with students. Transparent procedures and policies help reduce anxiety and provide a dependable framework for students. Trust also extends to interactions between students and teachers, fostering mutual respect and understanding. When students perceive their teachers and school staff as dependable and authentic, they are more likely to open up, share their experiences, and engage in the educational process.

Peer support is another powerful component of TIC. Schools can facilitate networks of support among students with similar experiences, helping them feel connected and understood. Peer groups provide a safe space for students to share their feelings and experiences, reducing feelings of isolation and promoting healing. This sense of community is especially valuable in multicultural societies like Nepal, where students from diverse backgrounds can find common ground and support.

Empowerment is also critical to TIC. Schools can empower students by involving them in decision-making about their education and welfare. Providing choices and encouraging participation helps students regain control, which trauma often strips away. This empowerment fosters resilience and self-belief, qualities essential for overcoming adversities. By giving students a voice in their education, schools can boost their confidence and capabilities, which are crucial for their development.

Considering the unique social, cultural, historical, and economic dimensions of Nepal, a culturally attuned approach to TIC is vital. Schools must appreciate and respect each child’s individual history and experiences, tailoring care to meet their specific needs. This inclusive environment respects the diversity of all students, supporting and celebrating their cultural contexts. By doing so, schools can be truly supportive and inclusive.

Implementing TIC in schools enhances the health and well-being of students. Addressing trauma and fostering healing can lead to positive engagement with education and overall better academic performance. An empathetic and supportive environment equips students emotionally, enabling them to deal with their studies and personal development effectively. Supported students are more likely to engage in school activities and maintain positive relationships with peers and educators.

Traditional methods can often re-traumatize students by triggering memories of prior trauma. TIC strategies aim to minimize such triggers by creating a sensitive environment that considers the impact of policies, disciplinary actions, and daily interactions on traumatized students. This approach fosters a supportive atmosphere, reducing the potential for re-traumatization and promoting overall student well-being.

TIC’s foundation in trust, collaboration, and empowerment strengthens relationships among students, teachers, and the broader learning community. These relationships are crucial for effective teaching and the recovery process. Engaged and understanding students actively participate in school life, and strong school community relationships provide a support network for navigating trauma-related challenges. TIC helps students develop coping strategies, increasing their resilience and ability to handle future problems.

Moreover, TIC can drive systemic reform in schools and communities, fostering a culture of empathy and respect that extends beyond education. By promoting compassion in societal interactions, schools can empower individuals with greater healing and growth capabilities. For Nepal, where students face multiple traumas, TIC in schools can identify and address these experiences, creating a conducive environment for growth and development. Implementing TIC can transform lives, nurturing an understanding environment where all learners can succeed and sustain their potential, ultimately contributing to a resilient and caring society.
