At 81, Progressive Writer Jhapendra Raj Baidya Publishes His Ninth Book, ‘Ajhai Pani Chaldaina’

Kathmandu / July 20: Veteran progressive writer Jhapendra Raj Baidya has released his new collection of short stories titled Ajhai Pani Chaldaina (Still Not Acceptable), marking the ninth literary work of his career. The book has been published when the author is 81 years old, demonstrating his enduring commitment to literature and social transformation.

A retired secondary school teacher, Baidya has continued his analytical writing and journalism despite age-related health challenges. Originally from Pyuthan, a district known for its strong left-oriented political history, he has long been a vocal advocate against caste-based discrimination, poverty, and regressive social practices.

Reflecting the powerful message of its title, Ajhai Pani Chaldaina explores the deep-rooted problem of caste discrimination and its impact on Nepali society. The book contains 27 short stories and three poems, all centered on social issues and the struggle for equality and justice.

An active and tireless writer, Baidya continues to publish articles on contemporary social and political issues, using his pen to raise awareness and encourage reform. He has also established a support fund for poor and marginalized students at Shree Mukti Secondary School in Pyuthan, where he spent the most productive years of his life teaching and mentoring young people.

In the book, Baidya recounts how he challenged the discriminatory caste system by attending a communal feast that included both Dalits (historically labeled “untouchables”) and members of so-called upper castes. Such real-life incidents make the collection vivid and compelling, illustrating his lifelong effort to confront social prejudice and promote equality.

Baidya lost his father at the age of five and was raised by a single mother. Having personally witnessed discrimination and hardship, he became a change agent in his community. His writings preserve those social realities and provide an important reference for future generations seeking to understand Nepal’s social history.

Beyond literature, Baidya has contributed to several sectors of society, including the establishment of the Pyuthan Literary Society, which has played a significant role in promoting language and literature in the remote hill district of Lumbini Province. In recognition of his contributions, he has received honors including the Press Freedom Fighter Award and other literary and social service awards.

At a time when many retired professionals feel their public role has come to an end, Baidya continues to inspire with his creativity and dedication.

“Even though my health sometimes challenges me, I still try to write at least one story every day. I am also preparing another book containing 121 stories, which I hope to publish next year,” Baidya said while showing the manuscript of his upcoming work.

His journey stands as a remarkable example of how age, hardship, and retirement need not diminish one’s passion for learning, writing, and serving society.
