Press Council Nepal expresses concern

Press Council NepalKathmandu / January 9: Press Council Nepal has expressed concern and interest in the problems faced by the journalists and media houses in broadcasting and disseminating news during the ongoing agitation in Tarai/Madhes coupled with the blockade of essential supplies.

At the Council’s board meeting on Saturday held deliberations on the security challenges faced by the journalists and media houses, obstruction in access and transportation, media’s independent and balanced role, and the journalists’ code of conduct.

The Council has appealed to the media houses and the journalists to steadfastly comply with the journalists’ code of conduct and journalists’ values and beliefs in any circumstances. It has further warned of taking action against journalists and media houses for non-compliance.

The media watchdog has also appealed for fulfilling special role in protecting country’s sovereignty, territorial integrity, national unity and social harmony while discouraging violence.

The Council has also called on the political parties including the agitating side to help create an environment allowing unobstructed exercise of freedom of expression and press and journalists’ security. RSS
