UML’s campaign for national awakening: Chairman Oli; NHRC urges one and all not to obstruct UML’s Mechi-Mahakali campaign

Morang / March 5: CPN (UML) Chairman KP Sharma Oli has said that the party’s ongoing campaign was for national awakening, not for electioneering.

The campaign was conducted to meet the people’s expectations for conducting polls and implementing constitution, Oli said while addressing a mass meeting organized by the party in Morang on Sunday.

Saying that the UML believes in action instead of talks, the former prime minister claimed that some political parties were hindering the UML’s campaign thinking that the veil of their illusion would be exposed.

“The UML has remained in the hearts of the people despite quitting the government,” he argued.

Likewise, UML Vice-Chairman Bhim Bahadur Rawal and other leaders expressed their opinions, saying that constitution amendment was not needed.

NHRC urges one and all not to obstruct UML’s Mechi-Mahakali campaign

Meanwhile, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has urged one and all not to cause any obstruction in the programme scheduled under the CPN (UML)’s Mechi-Mahakali campaign.

In a press statement issued Sunday, NHRC Spokesperson Mohana Ansari said everybody has a way to put differing views and opinions peacefully and assaults reported on the CPN (UML) leaders by the United Democratic Madhesi Front (UDMF) cadres during the campaign is deemed against the norms and values of human rights. Through the statement, the organisation urged all political parties concerned including the UDMF to instantly stop resorting to such activities.

Any political body planning a public programme coinciding with a prescheduled programme of other political party in similar venue/location would never give a positive outcome, the statement added, recalling the violent incident that had occurred at Gaur of Rauthat in 2063 BS.

The statement further mentioned the recent incidents in which stones were pelted at a jeep carrying party leader and lawmaker Ranju Kumari Jha; some people were injured in a scuffle ensued between the UDMF cadres and police in Gaur a week ago; and UML Saptari district committee secretary Shambhu Yadav and joint-secretary Pratap Narayan Chaudhary were manhandled and were smeared with soot and their vehicle vandalized by the UDMF cadres last Friday.

All these incidents were reported in course of the UML’s ongoing Mechi-Mahakali Campaign. The human rights body called on the government to probe into the Saptari incident and bring guilty ones to book, and keep the social harmony intact by averting any untoward incidents in the future. RSS
