Brick kiln entrepreneurs agree to imply modern technology

brickLalitpur / Feb 17: Brick kiln entrepreneurs in the South Asian region agreed to operate industries based on a modern and environment-friendly technology. Brick kilns are taken as a major contributor to increasing air pollution in the region.

At a workshop on the promotion of the ‘zigzag’ system in the operation of brick kilns jointly organised by International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) and Federation of Nepal Brick Industries, they agreed to work collectively to reduce brick kiln emissions.

In the two-day workshop, 25 brick kiln entrepreneurs from Nepal, Bangladesh, India and Pakistan had taken part.

The use of zigzag system in the brick production minimizes the carbon emissions thus reducing greenhouse gas effect, it was shared during the workshop. This environment-friendly technology will also lead to fuel efficiency and high productivity.

ICIMOD deputy director general Eklavya Sharma said the brick industries based traditional system has mainly had direct impact on mountaineering sector as it is resulted in more carbon emissions.

More carbon emissions means multiple impact on public health and decrease in agricultural productivity. He insisted on the need of collective efforts to cope with the situation.

On the occasion, ICIMOD’s Bidya Bimali Pradhan, Araniko Pandey and Federation Chair Mahendra Bahadur Chitrakar said the zigzag technology was promoted in brick production in Nepal after the 2015 April earthquake and this has lead to the reduction in air pollution by around 40 per cent. RSS
