Jhapa, Aug 3: The risk of riverbank erosion and flooding has been significantly reduced in Jhapa with the construction of embankments along the banks of Ratuwa river which flows through Gauradaha Municipality.

With the embankment construction, 200 houses along the river banks and approximately 500 bighas land are relieved to some extent of risk of being swept away, said Madan Adhikari, chairperson of the embankment construction and protection committee.

The 250 meters long embankments was constructed two years ago with the help of the local people. The People’s Embankment Programme donated 40000 sacks for the embankments. Likewise, Gauradaha Municipality provided Rs 200,000 for the embankment construction last year, said the Municipality.
But the settlements along the banks of local Ratuwa river in Gauradaha-6 are at risk of being washed away.
