Teachers’ peaceful protest continues; People protest against Kulman Ghising’s removal from NEA

Kathmandu / April 6: The peaceful protests of school teachers continue in the federal capital on Sunday as well. Today, they have occupied the area along the Babarmahal-Baneshwor route, demanding students and teachers-friendly School Education Act.

It has been the fifth day that teachers who have arrived here from different parts of the country gathered along the Babarmahal-Baneshwor area for the demonstrations.

The Confederation of Nepal Teachers (CNT) Chair Laxmi Kishore Subedi said the agitation will continue until their voices are heard.

Issuing a press statement today, the Confederation has urged teachers not to engage in copy-checking, results publishing, in any educational tours, training or seminar during the period of protests.

It may be noted that earlier Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli on Saturday upon arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) from an official visit to Thailand said that the teachers’ peaceful protests showed their ‘trust’ in the government.

Talking to the media at the TIA VVIP lounge, the Prime Minister said, “They are confident that the government will hear them. We will sit for talks with them. They are neither the protesters of the government nor we are their opposition,” he said, referring to the agitating protesters. He was of the view of addressing the issues through dialogue.

People protest against Kulman Ghising’s removal from NEA

Ghising supporters, including monks and various organisations, rally in Kathmandu demanding his reinstatement as managing director of Nepal Electricity Authority.

A demonstration was held in Kathmandu on Sunday in support of Kulman Ghising, former managing director of the Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA), who was dismissed by the government last month.

The demonstration, organised by the Kulman Ghising reinstatement joint struggle committee, saw participation from various unions, organisations, and the general public.

The rally included Buddhist monks, and protesters chanted slogans condemning his removal, calling it unjust and disgraceful.

The government dismissed Ghising from the key post in NEA and replaced him with Hitendra Dev Shakya on March 24.

Ghising is credited with taking initiatives to end hours-long power cuts and running the NEA more efficiently after years of mismanagement and financial losses.

Ghising moved the Supreme Court against his dismissal. Though he sought an interim order against the government move, the top court didn’t stay the decision. The case is sub-judice.
